About Us

MK Special Educational Needs and Disability Service (SENDIAS) is a statutory service offering confidential and impartial information, advice and support to children and young people with additional needs and their parents/carers. The remit of SENDIAS covers education, health and social care between the ages of 0 - 25.

Our SEND drop-in sessions have been resumed – please see Events section for details.

SENDIAS supports with the graduated approach and SEN support, the needs assessment and education, health and care plan processes, SEND tribunal appeals, school exclusions and disability discrimination issues. Support is available to families living in Milton Keynes but the child or young person may be attending an education setting outside the borough.

Referral eligibility is broad, from a concern about a child or young person with a potential additional need, to supporting with more complex issues. Self-referrals are preferred but third party referrals with consent from the parent/carer or young person will be considered. SENDIAS Referral Form

Our aim is to empower people who contact us for support to navigate the SEND assessment processes, prepare for meetings and help with documentation. We will listen and help to ensure young people and parents/carers understand their SEND legal rights; we will advocate if appropriate. If necessary and if it is possible, a caseworker will support at meetings. If there are worries about progress at school SENDIAS will work in partnership with the local authority and schools in a positive way to help improve the outcomes for children and young people.

Group support is delivered via workshops, an annual information day and outreach work. (Please see Events section for current outreach activity and booking details).

SENDIAS has a contract with the Department for Education and the Council for Disabled Children to deliver the Information, Advice and Support Programme.

New information is being added regularly to the website and existing information updated. If you can’t find what you are looking for or you’d like to give us feedback about our website please email us.

Statement of Change

In February 2021, the MK SENDIAS team will be part of Children’s Services Directorate positioned alongside the SEND service area. There are clear arrangements put in place for the SENDIAS Service to retain its impartiality and confidentiality. We will be reviewing these arrangements at the end of the year and through this period we will continue to seek views from parents, carer’s and young people on your experience of the service and your views on these arrangements. If you have any queries or feedback, please email contact@mksendias.org.uk

More details in our statement of change (PDF, 93KB).
